Welcome to the Counselor's Corner

Mrs. Green is the Academic Counselor and Drug and Alcohol Counselor at Gateway Alternative School. Prior to coming to Gateway, she served as the District Drug and Alcohol Counselor (7 years). She developed the Bastrop ISD Drug Program and coordinated the drug prevention program within the district. She earned her bachelor’s degrees from Angelo State University and Howard Payne University. She is a Licensed Chemically Dependency Counselor (LCDC) and a Licensed Social Worker (LSW).

In her role as District Drug and Alcohol Counselor, Mrs. Green works with students,
parents, teachers, administrators and community resources to ensure that all students are successful academically, socially and emotionally. She facilitates the BISD’s adopted drug and violence prevention curriculum -Too Good For Drugs- on all the BISD’s campuses. She conducted Drug Awareness presentations at Emile Elementary, Cedar Creek Elementary, Bastrop Intermediate School, Cedar Creek Intermediate School, Bastrop Middle School, Cedar Creek Middle School, Bastrop High School, Cedar Creek High School and Gateway School. She provides individual and group substance abuse counseling services for students. She provides individual counseling intervention services for students. She provides Parent Academy trainings for parents within the district. She coordinates the transitional intervention services for students when they return to their home campus.


Individual Support: Counselors provide support for students through individual
interactions in which they work together on a problem or a topic of interest. Individual counseling meetings offer students a safe environment in which to explore ideas, feelings, and behaviors. Counselors build trusting relationships with students and always consider their actions in terms of the rights, integrity, and welfare of students and families.
Individual counseling generally addresses the specific concerns of targeted students with identified needs. Students can be referred for counseling by parents/guardian, teacher, administrator or staff member. Counselors use individual counseling sessions to evaluate student needs and create plans for support. When appropriate, the Counselors may recommend that students receive additional support from school staff and/or outside services.

Substance Abuse Individual and Group Counseling:

In group counseling, the Drug and Alcohol Counselor works with eight to ten students addressing their drug and alcohol recovery issues. Group counseling provides positive peer support, enriches insight and guidance, fosters healthy self-expression, encouragement to abstain from substance of abuse and teaches new social skills.


The primary focus of consultation is to help parents, teachers, and administration to be more effective in working with each other on the behalf of students.
This team approach is a key factor in supporting and advocating for our students. During consultation, the Counselor work with teachers or parents to identify problems and concerns, develop strategies to address student needs, and create systems to provide academic, emotional and/or behavioral supports for students. Consultation may take place in individual or group conferences, through staff development activities, or parent education classes.
Students may be referred to the counselor by his/her parent(s). Students may also request to see the counselor in the office. Gateway faculty and staff may refer students presenting a concern at school. Teachers have counseling referral/permission forms on hand. If regular, continuing counseling is needed, a parent permission form will be sent home. Counseling services provided in a school setting are usually of short duration to facilitate student’s readiness to learn. Students needing additional counseling should seek assistance outside of the school.

When Calming Down Isn't an Option

One of the best ways to help a child who is struggling with an overabundance of stress is to help the child calm down. However, there are certain times when calming down simply is not an option. Some children's stress response systems are so activated and overloaded that they need outlets to be able to release and discharge their stress instead of being expected to calm down.

Instead of seeing your child as acting out or being "bad," the shift comes in seeing that in these difficult moments, your child is most likely discharging past trauma. Instead of focusing on getting the child to calm down, these are the moments of healing that need to be embraced and maximized--the magic happens in letting the "tiger roar!" Squelching and stopping the release of this trauma is actually one of the most ineffective ways to helping a child progress on his/her healing journey. In this webinar, Heather will discuss how trauma gets stored in the body and how to support and encourage a child to safely release all the built-up energy still locked within the cellular memory of your child.

Survival Energy

When a child goes through a traumatic experience, many times the completion of the flight/flight response is cut short and interrupted. The excess adrenaline that was surging in the body to help protect the child gets trapped and "freezes." When the child later experiences stress, fear, or overwhelm, this energy then "thaws" and is activated. This dormant energy is awakened and the result is often intense and disruptive behaviors and for many children, the result is aggression and violence..

Back to Happiness

In this webinar, Heather will give practical and effective strategies to help parents, educators, and mental health professionals help children impacted by trauma complete past fight/flight responses. Once a child is able to safely and completely discharge this stored-up energy, the child then becomes better equipped to handle the dynamics of being in a family and the typical demands placed on him/her at school. Finishing the unfinished business of trauma expands the child's window of stress tolerance and thus, gives the child the space to return to a calm and regulated state.
